VERSES WROTE BY A YOUNG GENTLEMAN, UPON HEARING THE CLOCK
STRIKE TWELVE, ON THE 31ST OF DECEMBER.
What solemn sound is that which now I hear!
The clock strikes twelve, and finishes the year.
Hear let me pause.---Shall I lament 'tis past,
Since this commenc'd perhaps may be the last?
Yes, this or some one will.  A few years more;
A very few! "and life's poor play is o'er."
'Tis death alone; 'tis death I wish to shun;
Yet soon, oh soon! will my small glass be run;
Soon shall the passing bell proclaim I'm gone;
